Different Kinds of Research

Applied research is contrasted with pure research basic research in discussion about research ideals, methodologies, programs, and projects. Because applied research resides in the messy real world, strict research protocols may need to be relaxed.

For example, it may be impossible to use a random sample. Thus, transparency in the methodology is crucial. Implications for interpretation of results brought about by relaxing an otherwise strict canon of methodology should also be considered. Due to its practical focus, applied research information will be found in the literature associated with individual disciplines.

Engineering fields include thermodynamics , heat transfer , fluid mechanics , statics , dynamics , mechanics of materials , kinematics , electromagnetism , materials science , earth sciences , engineering physics. Medical sciences , for instance medical microbiology and clinical virology , are applied sciences that apply biology toward medical knowledge and inventions, but not necessarily medical technology, whose development is more specifically biomedicine or biomedical engineering.

The BASc tends to focus more on the application of the engineering sciences. In Australia and New Zealand this degree is awarded in various fields of study and is considered a highly specialized professional degree. In the United Kingdom's educational system , Applied Science refers to a suite of "vocational" science qualifications that run alongside "traditional" General Certificate of Secondary Education or A-Level Sciences. These are an evolution of the GNVQ qualifications that were offered up to These courses regularly come under scrutiny and are due for review following the Wolf Report ; [8] however, their merits are argued elsewhere.

Basic research focuses on fundamental principles and testing theories. The history of science is replete with examples of basic research leading to real world applications. Just because a research study is not directed at specific set of circumstances does not mean that in the future the finding from that study will not be applied to a specific event or events.

When cell phones were first introduced, cognitive scientists began to worry about whether their use while driving could lead to increased numbers of automobile accidents. These predictions were derived from basic theories on limited attention capacities.

Classical and operant condition principles were developed mostly from experimenting on non-human subjects. Since the discovery of these principles, they have been applied to a wide array of human problems, such as teaching declarative knowledge, treating autistic children , treating overweight individuals, and treating phobias, just to name a few. Both applied and basic research are important to the scientific process. If it costs money, time and other precious resources, but does not have a direct application, then why bother?

Because basic research feeds applied research, and applied research feeds basic research. Basic research is a little less direct than applied research, so we will look at two different examples. Get access risk-free for 30 days, just create an account. The first basic research example is a common type: For example, program evaluation is a meticulous look at the benefits, costs and outcomes of a program.

Let's say we are program evaluators at a substance abuse rehabilitation facility, or rehab, and we want to know if they are rehabilitating substance abusers. We, as evaluators, might look into:. The answers to these questions are not applicable to anything, but act as a catalyst for future applied research for the rehab facility.

For instance, the last question requires that additional research be conducted, and this question is an applied research question. Again, the two types of research feed into one another; in this case, basic research fed the need for applied research.

The second basic research example deals with the broad research topic of reaction speeds. Does it help to know the speed at which a neuron fires, or the time it takes for your brain to react, or what kind of stimuli can make your brain react?

The information is not helpful unless you are using basic research as information or inspiration. Knowing how fast a nerve fires can help you measure the effects of certain diseases of the brain, like Lou Gehrig's or Parkinson's. Knowing how long it takes a brain to make a decision is instrumental to understanding the shoot or no shoot decisions police officers have to make. And, knowing what type of stimuli can cause a brain to react might help researchers create a better smoke alarm or a harmless riot suppression device.

Applied research is research that seeks to answer a question in the real world and to solve a problem. Basic research is research that fills in the knowledge we don't have; it tries to learn things that aren't always directly applicable or useful immediately.

Both types of research feed into one another and one research provides information for the other type. To unlock this lesson you must be a Study.
